This quote is from one of my favourite writers of the 20th Century, Norman Mailer. "Aquarius" was the name he gave himself in the third-person as a discursive tool to communicate his (many) thoughts on the complexities and differing perspectives of what the moon landing represented.
Originally what we now know as a published book "Of A Fire On The Moon" was a three part series in "Life" magazine. So vivid were his descriptions of the landing, it brought an almost cinematic quality to each recollection.
As a reader you felt his understandable misgivings he had articulated regarding the(quite literally) astronomical cost and scale of the Apollo mission .
Clearly i have used a quote from this earlier section of his piece which i've always loved.
His true writing genius revealed itself as he allowed both himself and the reader to press pause on those cynical reflections as the reality and historical proportions of what he was witnessing unfold, one pivotal moment at a time. It's a tremendous read which i thoroughly recommend.
