The Bible says that in a dream Jacob saw a ladder going up to heaven, and the word "top", rosh, is also commonly used in Hebrew to mean "head". So, in our Slavic text (or rather, in the Hebrew text from which the translation was made), the biblical image of the "top" of the stairs is obviously meant, while it is assumed that the stairs actually had a head, a human head at the very top. Thus, thanks to the literal understanding of the words of the Bible, "the ladder stands on the ground, and its top touches the sky," a heavenly "head" appeared in our pseudepigraph." Kugel J.
