Retablo of Gold That Refused to Be Gold Here the earth is cross-sectioned like a textbook that lost its footnotes. Veins of gold run clearly through the rock, but the miners walk past them carrying circuit boards and broken radios. Above, an alchemist’s furnace hums quietly, powered not by fire but by patience. Sulfur rises first. Then arsenic. Only later—almost reluctantly—gold appears, as if embarrassed to be desired. This retablo is given for the miracle of learning that what glitters least often costs the least to keep.
