In April 1903, within the hushed grandeur of the Ashwick Library in London, two daring women, Evangeline Moore and Elizabeth Carter - affectionately known as Eva and Bessi - rewrote the rules of innovation and independence. Blending Eva’s expertise in precision optics with Bessi’s inventive mechanical mind, the pair opened EECO (Evangeline & Elizabeth’s Curated Optics), the first optics shop ever housed inside a library. Their elegant, brass-fitted counter tucked between towering bookshelves became a beacon for scholars. Combining craftsmanship and empathy, they designed bespoke spectacles on-site, tailoring each pair to the reader’s eye and intellect. Their innovative minds brought clarity - both literal and intellectual - to a whole generation. More than just a shop, EECO was also a quiet rebellion - an assertion that women could not only participate in science and commerce, but lead it with vision and grace
