Artist16:9, 64K, VAC1.2 PURE HORROR PHOTOGRAPH. Final and darkest image of the anthology. Primitive isolated cottage during an unnatural late-October night. Interior camera positioned behind an adult family clustered around the final burning candle in the house after every other flame has inexplicably extinguished. Absolute darkness consumes almost the entire room. The locked wooden front door stands opposite them. From underneath it extends the shadow of something outside—but the shadow stretches toward the candle against the laws of light. It gradually divides into numerous long fingerlike silhouettes reaching across the floorboards. Through tiny cracks around the door there is no moonlight, landscape or exterior world—only featureless black. Above the family, unnoticed, the darkness of the ceiling has begun forming the faint suggestion of an enormous face whose scale cannot fit inside the cottage: barely perceptible eye sockets and the curvature of something leaning downward toward the candle. Extreme Caravaggesque tenebrism, approximately 85% of frame near-black, one physically accurate candle flame modelling terrified adult faces, wax, rough timber and trembling hands. 35mm lens, ISO 3200, authentic low-light grain and crushed shadows. Do not fully reveal the entity. The photograph must leave the viewer uncertain whether the darkness contains something—or whether the darkness itself has become the thing. No gore, no text, no Halloween iconography, no CGI aesthetic.
As autumn dies and the nights lengthen, darkness returns to places we have spent the year pretending were empty.
Beyond the firelight, ancient things are waking—things that remember when the night belonged entirely to them.
So keep the candles burning, lock the doors, and never mistake what you cannot see for something that isn't there. - Adrian Keeley
A young woman with long, dark, wavy hair, dressed in a distressed white nightgown, holds a lit candle in a silver holder as she cautiously walks through a dimly lit, old-fashioned room. Her face is illuminated by the candle's glow, revealing a look of fear and surprise as she glances towards an open wooden door on the right. Peeking from behind the door is a grotesque monster with scaly grey hands, sharp black claws, and a large, piercing yellow eye, surrounded by dark, stringy tendrils and what appears to be bloodstains or grime on the doorframe. The room features dark wooden beams on the ceiling, a patterned rug on the floor, and an antique grandfather clock and other furniture in the background. A large window on the left side of the room reveals a dark, rainy night outside, adding to the eerie atmosphere.
