Artist16:9, 64K, VAC1.2 PURE HORROR PHOTOGRAPH. Completely different setting: remote 1890s farmhouse kitchen during the final autumn storm. An adult farming couple and their adult daughter sit frozen around a rough wooden supper table illuminated solely by one trembling oil lamp. Rain lashes black windows. Muddy footprints begin at the locked back door and cross the kitchen floor toward an empty fourth chair. Behind the seated family, almost completely concealed in tenebrist darkness, stands the enormous scarecrow that was visible in their distant field before nightfall—now inside the house. Water drips from its soaked burlap clothing; rotten straw protrudes from sleeves; its crude sack head bends unnaturally low beneath the ceiling. Two tiny wet humanlike eyes are visible through poorly stitched holes. Nobody has dared turn around. Rembrandt-like practical lamplight, black peripheral shadows, realistic period surfaces, rainwater, mud, rough skin and worn fabric. Static 50mm eye-level photograph resembling impossible historical evidence. No blood, no gore; terror derives from something that should never have moved having quietly entered the home.
As autumn dies and the nights lengthen, darkness returns to places we have spent the year pretending were empty.
Beyond the firelight, ancient things are waking—things that remember when the night belonged entirely to them.
