*** Sri Lanka Starling - Gracula religiosa inornata ***
Short:
Rare endemic bird; wet forest specialist; declining due to habitat loss.
Facts:
Habitat: Wet-zone rainforests, tall canopy trees, dense mid-canopy.
Threats: Logging, forest fragmentation, illegal pet trade (for their voice), habitat degradation.
Details:
The Sri Lanka Starling, a subspecies of the Hill Myna family, is a striking and intelligent forest bird found only in Sri Lanka’s wet zone. Unlike its more widespread relatives, G. r. inornata has more subtle coloration, but still shows the classic glossy black plumage with bright orange-yellow facial wattles.
These birds live high in the forest canopy, moving in small flocks and feeding on fruits, insects, and nectar. Their loud, melodic calls are a signature sound of old-growth rainforests. They nest in natural tree cavities, making them highly dependent on mature forests with large old trees.
Unfortunately, the Sri Lanka Starling faces rapid decline because:
Logging and forest fragmentation reduce the availability of nesting trees.
Loss of continuous forest cover isolates populations.
Capture for the illegal pet trade (due to their ability to mimic sounds) threatens local groups.
Agricultural expansion pushes them into smaller habitat patches.
Conserving Sri Lanka’s remaining wet-zone forests—especially places like Sinharaja, Kanneliya, and Morapitiya—is critical for the survival of this rare and beautiful endemic bird.
