ArtistAn ancient Roman mosaic of the face of Medusa, surrounded by a mosaic border of small animals. Made in opus sectile, a technique using thin marble slabs, the mosaic adorns the entire atrium floor of a rich Roman residence. The thin marble slabs are colored yellow, black, red and white.
A high-angle, eye-level shot captures a detailed ancient mosaic floor, dominated by a large circular medallion at its center. The medallion features a classical female face, possibly Medusa or a goddess, with light skin tones, dark brown eyes, and wavy, flowing golden hair adorned with red and white ribbons, all rendered in small, colorful tesserae. This central face is set against a dark black background within the medallion. Surrounding the inner face is a thick, ornate circular band composed of black, dark red, and white segments, followed by a lighter white band. The outermost ring of the medallion showcases various animals, including birds, rabbits, and a lizard, depicted in a stylized, almost silhouette-like manner against a pale background. Beyond the circular medallion, the floor extends into a geometric pattern of larger, square and diamond-shaped marble tiles in shades of brown, tan, and cream, interspersed with darker square accents. The floor is bordered by a decorative black and white patterned strip. In the background, white classical columns stand on either side, with a dark wooden door visible in the distance, and parts of the walls are painted a deep red.
