The Kingdom Beneath the Bell Part 3
The Third Stroke of the Bell
The seven roses turned toward the shadow in the mirror. Merris stared at the figure beside Sir Hiss and the younger Nameless Traveller. “That cannot be,” she whispered. “I buried him myself.” The figure stepped into the light. He was tall, with kind eyes, a crooked smile and a silver key hanging from his collar. His shadow wore a black ribbon and moved a moment too late. “Master Aldren,” Merris said. “The Keeper who taught me everything.” Waldemar gripped the Compendium. “He was your teacher?” The Traveller shook their head. “Aldren was never the master. He tried to stop him.” In the mirror, Aldren reached for the Black Heart. “Don't divide it,” he pleaded. “You cannot separate remembering from choosing.” The masked man raised his hand. The Heart split like a bell breaking underwater. One half flew toward the Traveller; the other sank into the man's palm. Aldren stepped between them. His shadow tore loose and wrapped around the stolen half. The mirror darkened. Merris swallowed. “Then why did he return to Bellglass and tell us the kingdom was gone?” “Because he no longer remembered what he had done.” A crack ran through the pool. The city's clocks struck a quarter before midnight. Thimblewick opened his ledger. From the pool rose a staircase of black stone. At its foot waited a door bearing seven circles and a divided heart. Waldemar approached, but the first circle filled with darkness. A voice spoke from the lock. “Who owns a promise?” The Traveller answered, “The one who makes it.” The circle shone gold. The other six turned like listening faces. Waldemar opened the Compendium. Its pages revealed seven chairs, six occupied by shadows and one empty. Beneath appeared: THE THIRD STROKE IS NOT A PUNISHMENT. IT IS AN INVITATION. The door swung inward. Beyond lay a bridge of silver glass suspended over a black lake. Across the water rose the Palace of Unspoken Names, its towers stitched together with ribbons of darkness. Thousands of lanterns floated beneath the bridge. Each held a forgotten face. The Traveller stepped forward. “Those are the missing people.” Merris studied the lanterns. “Six Keepers could have opened this place.” “Six were told it would destroy Bellglass,” the Traveller replied. “And they believed him.” The bridge rang beneath their footsteps. Halfway across, black ribbons rose from the lake and twisted into a tall figure wearing a silver mask. “Seventh Keeper,” the master greeted Waldemar. “You have travelled far to make an old mistake.” “I've travelled far to ask why you steal people's memories.” “Because memories hurt,” the master answered. “I offer them peace.” “You offer them a cage,” Finnick said. The mask turned toward him. “Little Witness. You were promised to me.” Finnick raised his pebble. “I never signed anything.” “Your silence was sufficient.” “Then your contract is rubbish.” Thimblewick stepped forward, trembling. “As Deputy Registrar of Unfinished Arrivals, I must agree. Consent cannot be entered retrospectively, even in Everwhen.” The master stared. “Who permitted you to speak?” “Form Seven-B,” Thimblewick replied, opening his ledger. “In triplicate.” The black ribbons hesitated. Waldemar placed the Compendium on the bridge and opened it to the empty seventh circle. Golden letters rose: A PROMISE WITHOUT CHOICE IS NOT A PROMISE. The lanterns began to glow. The master struck the bridge with his staff. A crack raced toward Finnick, who slipped and caught the edge with one paw. “Waldemar!” Waldemar seized him. Merris threw her keys across the gap. They joined into a silver chain, binding the bridge long enough for Finnick to climb up. The master lifted his staff again. The Traveller stepped between them and held out the first half of the Black Heart. “You wanted to stop every farewell,” they said. “But a farewell can also mean someone is free to go.” The master recoiled. Beneath his mask, a voice whispered, “I only wanted them to stay.” The Traveller's pendant began to ring. The mask cracked, revealing not Aldren but a stranger with frightened eyes and a face worn thin by regret. He looked toward the lanterns. “I thought if nobody could leave, nobody would be forgotten.” Above the palace, the bronze bell began to move. The third stroke was coming. “If it rings,” Merris warned, “the kingdom will seal itself around every stolen name.” “Unless the door stays open,” said the Traveller. The master clutched his half of the Heart. Ribbons tightened around his wrist, pulling his hand toward the bell. “I cannot stop it!” he cried. “My shadow has kept the bargain too long!” From the palace surged a giant black shape made of tangled promises. It had no face, only a thousand locks.
