More about Under the Ice at Low Tide

Based on a short story I read in school as a child: "The Last First Time." In the story a young Inuit boy is taken beneath the ice sheet at low tide to collect shellfish before the water comes back. His fear of darkness and danger melt away in a wave of awe and wonder at the ephemeral beauty of the alien landscape. The title relates to his regret that he can only experience this feeling of discovery once--it will never be new again. I created this image to honor a tale I read once but has been with me for 35 years.
