THE GIRL (Marilyn Monroe):
It’s just that when it gets so hot, I can’t sleep. I get these terrible dreams…
RICHARD:
Nightmares?
THE GIRL:
Uh-huh. Like last night—
(pauses, thinking)
Well, maybe it was because we went to the movies.
RICHARD:
What did you see?
THE GIRL:
Oh, one of those science-fiction things.
(brightens suddenly)
Oh! And then that Creature from the Black Lagoon—I saw that three times!
RICHARD:
Three times?
THE GIRL:
He was kinda scary-looking… but good-looking, too. In a—well—ugly sort of way.
(she giggles)
I don’t know why, but he always seemed sort of nice.
RICHARD:
Nice? The Creature?
THE GIRL:
Well, he just wanted to be loved, that’s all. Isn’t that the whole trouble with everybody?
RICHARD:
(laughs awkwardly)
I guess so.
THE GIRL:
Anyway, last night I dreamed he came after me. Only he wasn’t really mean—he just sort of wanted company.
RICHARD:
That’s some dream.
THE GIRL:
(cheerfully)
Uh-huh! Only then the dream changed, and I was back in that movie where the man turns into a werewolf, and I kept thinking to myself: “If he’d only stayed with the Creature, none of this would have happened.”
