NO TEXT IN PICTURE. To mean you have attained enlightenment, you must answer an absolute, unwavering "YES" to every single question—not just as an idea, but as your lived, unshakeable reality at all times. ------------------------------ ## The Enlightenment Verification Questionnaire## 1. Eradication of the Three Poisons * Do you experience an absolute, permanent absence of greed (Lobha), meaning you have zero craving for sensory pleasures, wealth, status, or even continued existence? * Do you experience an absolute, permanent absence of anger or aversion (Dosa), meaning it is mentally impossible for you to feel irritation, resentment, malice, or fear under any circumstance? * Do you experience an absolute, permanent absence of delusion (Moha), seeing reality exactly as it is without any mental filters, projections, or biases? ## 2. The Five Lower Fetters ( there is no turning back) * Have you completely destroyed the illusion of a permanent "self" or "I" (Sakkaya-ditthi)? * Are you entirely free from any doubt or hesitation regarding the true nature of reality (Vicikiccha)? * Have you let go of all attachment to superstitious rituals, rules, or dogmas as paths to salvation (Silabbata-paramasa)? ## 3. The Five Higher Fetters (The Final Breakthrough) * Have you completely ended all subtle desire for existence in material, blissful realms (Rupa-raga)? * Have you completely ended all subtle desire for existence in formless, purely mental realms (Arupa-raga)? * Have you completely eliminated the subtle habit of comparing yourself to others—feeling superior, inferior, or equal (Mana)? * Is your mind permanently still, completely free from even a single moment of restlessness or stray thoughts (Uddhacca)? * Have you permanently uprooted the deepest, unconscious layer of spiritual ignorance (Avijja)? ## 4. The Ultimate Declaration * When you look at your mind, do you possess the direct, experiential knowledge: "Birth is ended, the holy life has been fulfilled, what had to be done has been done, there is no further coming into any state of being"? ------------------------------ ## The Catch: The "Fetters" of the Mind If you can honestly answer "Yes" to all of the above, early Buddhism would consider you an Arahant—someone for whom this life is absolutely the last. However, the Buddha added a profound psychological warning regarding our earlier discussion on the survival instinct. The human ego is highly sophisticated. It is entirely possible for the mind to mimic enlightenment to satisfy the survival instinct's desire to feel special, secure, or "achieved." Because of this, the Buddha noted that true enlightenment is verified not by an internal questionnaire, but by how the mind reacts over time when faced with extreme conditions: severe physical pain, intense unexpected praise, total loss, or the threat of immediate death. If the mind flinches, wavers, or generates even a speck of anxiety in those moments, a subtle "raft" of identity is still being held onto. In the texts, when monks thought they were enlightened, the Buddha would often test them by asking them to describe how they experience sensory inputs (like sights and sounds). Would you like to know the specific test sentence the Buddha used to check if someone's mind was truly liberated?
