In the Bible, David played his lyre for King Saul to soothe him when he was tormented by a harmful spirit from God:
Story
In 1 Samuel 16:14–23, David plays his lyre for Saul whenever the spirit from God is upon him. Saul is refreshed and the spirit departs.
Significance
David's playing of the lyre for Saul was an act of ministering to Saul in his suffering. Music was believed to have a therapeutic effect. David's skill with the lyre eventually led to him succeeding Saul as king of Israel.
David's skill
The Book of Samuel calls David a "skillful harp (lyre) player" and "the sweet psalmist of Israel".
Symbolism
The harp of David has been a symbol of joy, redemption, and hope for the future throughout history.
What does a lyre symbolize in the Bible?
In addition to making music, these instruments were understood to have something of a “numinous effect.” The playing of the harp and lyre drove the evil spirit out of Saul (1 Sam 19:9–10), and according to 2 Chronicles 5, the harp and lyre were played prior to the arrival of the glory of Yahweh.
How did King David praise God?
In periods of prosecution by his enemies, David cries to God in shame, anger, grief, and for forgiveness. And in times of excitement (like 2 Samuel 6), David praises God by dancing, singing, and shouting. David humbles himself by relinquishing his human desire for control and asks God for help.
