What is the Greek word for true vine?
The True Vine (Greek: ἡ ἄμπελος ἡ ἀληθινή hē ampelos hē alēthinē) is an allegory or parable given by Jesus in the New Testament.
The metaphor
Jesus uses the image of a vine and its branches to describe the relationship between him and his disciples:
Jesus is the vine: Jesus is the "true vine" from which all life comes.
Disciples are the branches: Jesus' disciples are the branches of the vine.
God the Father is the gardener: God the Father is the gardener who cares for the vine and its branches.
Purpose
The metaphor encourages the disciples to remain connected to Jesus, even though he is about to be crucified and depart for heaven:
Jesus wants his disciples to know that he will not desert them.
Jesus wants his disciples to know that they are as closely connected to him as the branches of a vine are connected to its stem.
Jesus uses the metaphor in John 15:1–17, which is part of his farewell discourse to his disciples:
Jesus is preparing his disciples for his crucifixion, resurrection, and departure for heaven.
Jesus is giving his disciples final instructions, warnings, promises, and encouragements.
Related Old Testament imagery
The Old Testament alludes to Israel being a vine, planted and tended by God.
What is the vine symbol of Jesus?
Jesus describes himself metaphorically as being “the vine” while his followers are the “branches”. Why? Because Jesus also describes “fruit of the vine” as being love, peace, righteousness, kindness, and self control.
