Demons are afraid of cats and their gaze In the Mirror of the Monks, Evagrius makes an unexpected observation: "If a cat enters a cell and stares intently into a corner, know that a demon is hiding there, for these animals see unclean spirits and put them to flight" (Antirrheticus, PG 40, 1305). (This is 1,000 years earlier than medieval beliefs about cats as protectors from evil spirits!)
In a richly decorated room, a startled monk in red robes stands at an ornate doorway, while another monk, also in red, holds a circular object. A black cat watches curiously nearby.
