The station did not make power. That was the child's version, painted on school
walls so no one had to picture what came in raw from the collectors beyond
atmosphere: not current, not lightning, but convulsion dragged from tidal shear and
solar violence. It arrived at the western throat as an insult to everything that wanted
to remain assembled.
The first turbine took the insult in its teeth. Vanes the size of doors blurred into a
gray disc, not spinning so much as refusing to be torn apart. The stream hit, lost
phase, spat harmonics sideways, hammered the casing hard enough to make men
bite blood from their tongues. Chief Alen stood three bays down with one hand on
the rail, feeling the error through her palm. Instruments lagged. Flesh did not.
Each stage removed one ugliness. The second bled surge. The third shaved
frequency into bands. The fourth caught heat before it climbed into murder. Down
the hall the cores opened and closed like throats swallowing suns. Between them,
discharge ran exposed in caged channels, orange and white, braided with violet
teeth. It looked alive only because living things mistake violence for kinship. This had
no appetite. Appetite would have been easier. Appetite negotiates. This only continued.
The engineers kept to the walkways because the centerline belonged to force not
yet housebroken. They watched seals, listened for bearing chatter, tasted ozone
through respirators. Every console displayed quantities too clean to describe the
thing ten meters away. Voltage was a courtesy. Temperature was a rumor. Load was
a leash made of numbers. Alen had seen a coupling fail in training; the failed section
crossed a room faster than apology and wrote a man's shadow into the wall.
Bay Twelve slipped a degree. No alarms. Alen felt the phase lean before the system
admitted it. One disagreement moved down the line and taught every following stage
the wrong song. She hit override until her thumbnail split. Operators dumped load
into sacrificial banks. Black towers under the floor drank excess and screamed. The
lights dimmed across three districts. Elevators stopped. Hospitals cursed the flicker.
Lovers in high apartments looked up, annoyed, unaware their rooms were being
protected from power not yet fit to touch copper.
The correction took eleven seconds and cost two rotors, a bearing stack, and the
hearing in Alen's left ear. When the final stage caught the stream again, the hall
seemed to inhale. The discharge narrowed. The turbines settled from violence into
labor. Downstream, the grid received what it had asked for: clean current,
anonymous, ready to boil water and open doors and keep children warm without
telling them what had nearly come through.
Alen wiped blood from her ear and watched the meters turn green one by one. That
was the humiliation of this place. The better they did the work, the less anyone
would ever know what power had been before it learned manners.
