Note: This reminds me that last Sunday I happened to show up at mass on the first communion day when there were lots of little girls in white. I happened to be surrounded with teenage girls who were not getting their first communion, although they all took the host. If you are a Baptist reading this just ignore the details. George Tooker did not paint girls lined up like this. People lined up is an old Lakota or Cheyanne drawing system. Oddly enough, I happened to teach at a Lakota school for a while and I once gave paper and colored pencils to a girl who drew a picture of her friends all lined up in a row, just like in the old ledger books. Even more oddly, Tooker used to draw pictures and painting ideas in a ledger book.
