After Maxwell came Einstein. He showed that space and time as well as matter and energy - just like electricity and magnetism - were more intimately connected than anyone had imagined. Starting with the simple postulates that the laws of physics must be the same for all observers in uniform relative motion - and that all such observers must agree on the speed of light - he profoundly changed our picture of reality. A few equations later, the universe had become a lot stranger! And ultimately, gravity turned out to follow from... the local geometry of spacetime
