The tremor of the massive door made the ancient walls beneath the castle quake, while black mist billowed thicker between the broken chains, swirling across the stone floor like living smoke. Penelope sensed at once that something behind the iron had awakened, not fully, not free, but alert. The two enormous, glowing eyes had already vanished back into the darkness, but the mere memory of their gaze was enough to make her heart race. Sir Hiss stood motionless before the door, his dark cloak hanging heavily from his shoulders, and for the first time, the dreaded lord of the castle seemed not like someone who controlled secrets, but like someone who was haunted by them. Far below, that slow heartbeat echoed again. This time, the distant echo out in the woods answered faster. Closer. Sir Hiss raised his head abruptly. His reptilian eyes narrowed. "It's moving," he said softly. "What's moving?" Penelope asked immediately. But Sir Hiss didn't answer directly. Instead, he stepped back slowly from the black door, as if afraid of turning his back on it for too long. The silver chains above the ancient lock continued to tremble slightly, and the greenish symbols on them now pulsed in the same rhythm as the dull heartbeat deep beneath the castle. "The porter," Sir Hiss murmured finally. Penelope immediately remembered the voice from behind the door. The porter has come. A cold draft suddenly swept through the passage. Not from above. But from the depths of darkness beyond the iron. As it did, the black mist began to move strangely. Slowly, indistinct figures formed within it. Shadowy silhouettes in long coats. Some seemed almost human. Others not. And in the midst of them, Penelope thought she glimpsed something else for a moment: faintly glowing symbols, moving through the darkness like liquid light. The same symbols. The same intertwined lines. Like on Waldemar's device. Sir Hiss noticed her gaze at once. "You must never touch those symbols," he said sharply. "Why?" "Why?" Penelope asked. A long moment passed. Then Sir Hiss briefly closed his eyes. "Because they open pathways." The floor vibrated again. But this time the echo didn't come from the door alone. Somewhere high up in the castle, a dull thud suddenly sounded, as if a heavy gate had been opened. At the same time, the greenish light of the symbols flickered more intensely. Sir Hiss froze instantly. "No," he whispered. Before Penelope could say anything, they heard quick footsteps on the stone stairs. A few moments later, Waldemar appeared in the entrance of the ancient passage, closely followed by Robin Hood and his companions. The raccoon carried the strange device tightly under his arm, its pointers now completely out of control.
