ACHIROPITA-
It is a name typical of the province of Cosenza, and centralised for more than half of the cases in Rossano; its diffusion is due to the local cult to "Maria Santissima Achiropita", a title attributed to an image of the Madonna with the literal meaning of "painted without hands", i.e. "without human intervention" (the fresco is in fact, according to tradition, the work of God)[1][2].
Etymologically, the word "achiropita" is composed of the Greek words χείρ (chèir, "hand") and ποιείν (poièin, "to create"), preceded by a privative alpha, meaning "made without the use of hands"[1][2].
