I remember in 1971 fitting one of my turntables with a DPDT (double pole, double throw) switch to reverse one of the two motor windings in order to play LP's (long-playing records, 33 RPM 12 inch) and singles (45 RPM 7 inch) backwards for a laugh. On the semi-professional record decks we used, the AC motors had two windings, one being 90 degrees out of phase with the other (a capacitor provided the phase shift) so reversing one winding caused the turntable to spin backwards :) Lol :)
You could also play reel-to-reel tapes backwards by flipping the tape surface so the shiny side ran against the head, but you'd lose a lot of high frequencies due to the thickness of the tape. Or if it was a two-track tape you could play it on a four-track tape deck using track 3 instead of track 1. You could also play a four-track tape on a two-track tape deck, but you'd get a mix of both tracks 1 and 3 playing at the same time, one forwards, one backwards. Lol :)
Nowadays of course you can do all this digitally, with apps like Cool Edit or Fruity Loops :)
