Scientific Field Note:
The inverted mirror beetle (Mirrotus inversa) lives exclusively on the underside of shiny leaves. Its chitinous dorsal shell is polished to reflect light back into itself—an effect that allows the beetle to become "invisible" as long as it is stationary. Researchers report that the beetle perceives its surroundings backward—evaluating movements in reverse—and therefore often flees backward when startled. Particularly striking is its tiny dorsal shield, which displays a distorted reflection of the world—usually sadder than reality.
