A colorful flower garden by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, and Paul Cezanne
In my fiction, this painting was created by Julian Stone (1878–1954).
When Julian presented the painting to Cézanne at his studio in Aix-en-Provence, the reaction was not the praise Julian expected. Cézanne, known for his prickly and often paranoid temperament, was visibly disturbed.
"This is not art," Cézanne reportedly hissed, "this is a theft of the soul. You have seen my eyes and stolen them. You are a mirror, Monsieur Stone, and a mirror has no heart. You will never be an artist; you are merely a ghost."
Cézanne threw him out of the studio. JS was shaken and disillusioned with the "art world," but he shrugged it off, since he had learned everything he needed to know about painting and set about mastering architecture...
