When you're in the middle of hurricane force winds whipping fully grown trees into dancing dryads, and the sea surge swamps entire communities as it moves inland, and a day later it creates catastrophic flooding 700 miles north of its landfall in Florida, it is easy to see why superstitions still have power. In my own search for meaning, I find imagining Mother Nature's fury with human folly the most believable. We have dithered ourselves into climate change and have no way back now. Here is Mother Nature as the embodiment of the spirit of the earth itself.
