Williamsburg was the capital of the Virginia colony from 1699 until 1779 and was one of America's first planned cities. Governor Francis Nicholson supervised the city's layout, which was designed to be "new and well-ordered" and suitable for the capital of the largest and most populous of the British colonies in America. The city was settled by the English during and after the Second Anglo-Powhatan War and was called Middle Plantation due to its location equidistant between the York and James rivers. Williamsburg was also a site of trade, diplomacy, and tensions with the American Indian tribes who lived on the land on which the English had settled, and tribal delegations of American Indians were a common sight in the city
