In the open understory of the dense jungle, a pair of Yucatan Jays flash their vivid powdery blue wings and tail as they move their black body, hopping from branch to branch on their bright yellow legs, their dark eye glitters from their black head; post impressionism in the combined styles of Bruno Liljefors lively birds and Henri Rousseau's dense jungle compositions.
Yucatan Jay, Cyanocorax yucatanicus.
Found in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala) in subtropical or tropical dry forests, plantations, and forest edges. They are highly social, traveling in noisy groups of 5 to 25 birds; and cooperative breeders, with younger birds helping raise chicks.
They are omnivorous, eating insects, seeds, fruits, and small vertebrates. And, like other Corvids, they are adaptable to human-modified areas.
