The Sri Lanka Rock Agama is a striking, medium-sized lizard found only in the island’s central and southwestern rainforests. It is known for its beautifully patterned body—often showing a mix of earthy browns, olive tones, and subtle banding—which helps it blend perfectly with moss-covered rocks and tree bark.
Unlike many agamas that prefer open, sunlit spaces, this species is mostly arboreal and adapted to the cool, shaded environments of wet-zone forests. It often clings to tree trunks or large boulders, staying motionless to avoid predators. The agama feeds on insects, spiders, and small invertebrates found along forest floors and trunks.
Its survival is closely tied to healthy rainforest ecosystems. When these forests are fragmented or cleared, the agama loses essential microhabitats such as:
Mossy rock surfaces used for basking and hiding
Large trees needed for climbing and nesting
Dense canopy cover that maintains the cool, humid conditions it depends on
Major threats include:
Deforestation for plantations, housing, and infrastructure
Forest fragmentation, isolating populations
Human disturbance, especially in forest edges and trails
Introduced predators, like domestic cats
