In the ancient coastal town of Narthesk, long forgotten by the outside world, there exists a secretive and eldritch cult devoted to Thalagog, the Great Algae Deity. The origins of this cult date back to an age when the world was young, and the boundaries between land and sea were fluid and ever-changing. It is said that Thalagog emerged from the deepest, darkest abyss of the ocean, a primordial being formed from the very essence of ancient algae that thrived in the abyssal depths.
According to the mythos passed down through generations, Thalagog is a deity of immense power, embodying both creation and decay. The deity is believed to be the progenitor of all marine life, its form entwined with the fertile algae that gave birth to countless underwater ecosystems. The cultists believe that Thalagog’s ancient, sentient algae has the power to grant eternal life and wisdom, and that it holds the secrets of the universe within its ever-spreading tendrils.
The founding of the cult occurred when the first high priest, an ancient mariner named Valassus, discovered a hidden cave beneath the waves, filled with luminous, pulsating algae. Valassus claimed to have received visions from Thalagog, revealing the true nature of existence and the path to transcendence through symbiosis with the sacred algae. The mariner returned to Narthesk, spreading the gospel of Thalagog and gathering followers who were eager to attain the promised enlightenment and eternal life.
The cultists of Thalagog engage in elaborate rituals to honor their deity. They believe that through ritualistic consumption and communion with the sacred algae, they can become one with Thalagog, gaining its favor and eternal life. The pelagian appearance of the worshippers is a result of generations of symbiosis with the algae, their bodies gradually transformed to better serve their aquatic god.
Deep within the heart of Narthesk lies the Temple of Thalagog, a submerged sanctuary accessible only at low tide through hidden caverns. The temple is a hauntingly beautiful yet grotesque structure, overgrown with bioluminescent algae that casts an eerie green glow over the ancient stone. The centerpiece of the temple is the towering statue of Thalagog.
The cult gathers in this temple to perform their rituals, praying to Thalagog for guidance, protection, and transformation. The air within the temple is thick with the pungent aroma of brine and decay, and the chants of the cultists echo ominously off the stone walls, creating an atmosphere of dread and reverence.
