Skin Deep within Mistmoor, where silver mists drifted between ancient reed forests and the waters reflected the sky like shattered mirrors, lived the people known as the Morks. Most travelers avoided their homeland. Paths vanished too easily within the fog. Familiar trails often led somewhere entirely different. Yet to the Morks, the marsh was a living land filled with secrets. No one knew its hidden waterways, floating islands, and forgotten ruins better than they did. Among them, Morksik was known as a particularly curious soul. The young Morks wore a brown leather tunic, a weathered backpack filled with strange discoveries, and a broad utility belt carrying maps, compasses, and countless objects whose purpose even he sometimes forgot. His large bat-like ears constantly twitched in every direction while his clever little eyes searched for new mysteries. On a particularly foggy morning, Morksik found something extraordinary. He was exploring a narrow wooden walkway leading to an abandoned observation platform. Long ago, another people had watched the movements of the stars above the marsh from that place. Now only decaying black posts remained standing in the water. While searching between the boards for old coins, Morksik noticed something hidden beneath moss and mud. It was a rolled-up map. Yet it was neither paper nor parchment. Its surface felt cool and damp. Fine silver fibers ran through it like living veins. As he carefully unrolled it, a thin strand of mist rose from within. The lines of the map appeared slowly. Rivers, islands, and strange symbols formed across its surface as though drawn by invisible hands. “A Mist-Skin Map,” Morksik whispered in amazement. He had only heard stories about such maps. The oldest Morks claimed they were woven from living mist itself. They did not reveal ordinary roads. Instead, they showed paths leading to things that had been forgotten. No sooner had Morksik fully opened the map than one of its symbols began to glow faintly. It lay deep in the western reaches of Mistmoor, where every known chart showed only open water. A sensible Morks would have brought the map to the elders. Morksik was rarely sensible. That very afternoon he climbed into his small rowboat and followed the mysterious symbol. The farther he traveled, the thicker the mist became. The familiar sounds of the marsh faded away. Even the water striders disappeared. At last he reached a region he had never seen before. Ahead of him rose a small island. At least, that was what he first believed. As he approached, he realized his mistake. The entire landmass was moving slowly through the water. It was a gigantic turtle. Its shell was covered with grass, moss, and small trees. Between the roots stood the remains of ancient stone towers.
