Alice (Lewis Carroll character) runs straight toward us across the chessboard, heading for the last row's square, above which, like an object in a computer game, a golden multi-pointed crown illuminated with a blue halo hovers low. Pursuing the Alice are a furious black war elephant (a somewhat comical character combining the appearance of a black chess bishop and a real menacing war elephant with tusks and a raised trunk), along with a black war knight (a somewhat comical character that combines the appearance of the black chess knight with a leaping, shiny black horse with menacingly gleaming eyes and a row of magnificent horse teeth visible beneath its upper lip). The chase also involves two identical-looking black pawns (depicted as two clumsy, squat medieval foot soldiers in black battle armor, wearing closed helmets and holding swords). In the distance, threateningly waving her arms towards us, is the black chess queen with a black crenelated crown on her head, dressed in a black floor-length gown (looking like an evil fairy-tale queen).
