The Morks of Mistmoor – Chapter 8 – The Echo Caves of Hollow Hill – Part 3 – The Last True Echo
For several long heartbeats neither Morksik nor Borstel moved. The silence inside the crystal cavern seemed deeper than before, as though Hollow Hill itself had been waiting for someone to discover its oldest secret. The countless reflections within the towering crystal pillars slowly faded until only the pale blue glow remained. Then the gentle voice of Morksik's grandmother returned once more. "Morksik..." This time he closed his eyes instead of following it. He listened carefully. The voice sounded warm, familiar and filled with love, yet something was missing. It carried no breathing between the words, no tiny pause, no quiet laugh that always appeared when she told one of her favorite stories. It was perfect, and because it was perfect, it could not be real. Morksik lowered his walking staff. "You are only an echo," he whispered kindly. "My grandmother spoke these words long ago, but she is not here." The familiar voice fell silent. Moments later dozens of other voices drifted through the cavern. Children laughed somewhere among the crystals. An old traveler wished his family farewell. A mother quietly sang a bedtime song. Friends promised they would meet again. Every sentence floated gently through the chamber before disappearing into the shimmering stone. None of the voices sounded frightening anymore. They sounded lonely. Borstel slowly looked around the enormous cave. "These aren't ghosts," he said softly. Morksik shook his head. "No. They're memories carried by sound." As if the hill had been waiting for those words, a deep, gentle vibration spread through the crystal pillars. Their soft blue light slowly changed into warm silver. One after another the countless crystals began to hum together, forming a quiet melody unlike anything the two little Morks had ever heard. It was neither happy nor sad. It simply felt true. The silver mist gathered at the center of the cavern, circling slowly until it formed the shape of an ancient Mork. His fur shimmered like moonlight upon still water, and tiny crystals rested among the long white hairs of his beard. His kind amber eyes held the peaceful patience of someone who had listened for countless generations. He carried no staff, no crown and no weapon. Instead, both of his empty paws rested gently before him. Borstel instinctively stepped behind Morksik. The old figure smiled warmly. "There is no need to hide, little traveler." His voice was calm and carried no echo at all. "Who are you?" Morksik asked. "I am called Echor," the ancient guardian replied. "I have listened to the last spoken words of Mistmoor for longer than even the oldest stories remember." Borstel carefully peeked around Morksik's shoulder. "Then... all these voices..." Echor nodded. "Every living heart leaves behind one final echo. Words of hope. Words of love. Words of forgiveness.
