Penelope, Odysseus' wife, knew how to scare off her numerous suitors during her husband's odyssey by pretending that she first had to weave a shroud for her father-in-law Laërtes. But during the night she kept unraveling what she had woven during the day. This went well until the unfaithful maid Melantho betrayed her, whereupon she decided to set the suitors an impossible task: They were to shoot through twelve axe rings with Odysseus' bow. None of the candidates could draw the bow. Only Odysseus, who had returned in the meantime and had been disguised as a beggar by Athena, succeeded.
