Kybele ( Κυβέλη), called ‘Great Mother’ (Μεγάλη Μήτηρ, Magna Mater in Rome). The goddess originally came from Phrygia in Asia Minor and travelled from there to Crete. In ancient Greece, she was considered the great mother of the gods, especially in Crete, and was known as Magna Mater in the Roman Empire.
Kybele was abandoned in the wilderness by her father because she was a girl; he wanted a son and not a daughter. However, Cybele did not die, but was cared for by wild animals, especially lions, so that she stayed alive. The lion became her sacred animal.
