Colored pencil drawing on heavy cold-press illustration board with a pronounced wove tooth, executed as a finished studio portrait study. The medium is dry pigment: wax-and-oil pencils sharpened to a needle for the detail and used blunt, on their side, for the broad tonal beds. The drawing is built in translucent veils of fine hatching and cross-hatching through many passes, then burnished with a paper stump and a colourless blender so the strokes fuse into soft, waxy, almost painterly gradations; paper tone of warm ivory is left bare in the open lights, while the deepest darks are pressed in with heavy pressure until glossy and near-black. Fine pencil grain stays visible throughout, and a few highlights are lifted back out with a kneaded eraser. Faint graphite underdrawing ghosts through in the thin passages. The subject is two insanely handsome men 29 year old slender , standing three-quarter length and turned slightly toward the viewer, his chin lowered so he stares up from under the brim with dark, direct, faintly defiant eyes. His jaw is sharp, his cheekbones flushed, his lips full and parted, his brows dark and level. His hair is a tousled dark brown mass crushed down under a wide-brimmed felt cowboy hat of near-black umber, the crown pinched and the brim curved, its felt rendered in dense overlapping diagonal strokes of black, sepia and cold grey. His right arm is raised, the hand gripping the front of the brim and pushing the hat back, the forearm foreshortened across the top of the frame, the elbow cropped at the left edge. A small silver stud earring glints in his left ear. He is bare-chested, the torso long and lean with a faint suggestion of ribs and a soft line of abdominal muscle, the skin built up in warm ochre, peach, burnt sienna and white, with cool grey-violet half-tones in the shadow under the arm and along the flank. Over this he wears a cropped, sleeveless denim vest, frayed at the armholes, the blue worn pale and chalky, stitched in white, with a faded embroidered patch at the chest and long leather thongs dangling from the shoulder. A heavy dark leather harness strap with punched eyelets, a large brass buckle and rivets cuts diagonally over the vest from shoulder to hip. Low on his hips sits a wide studded leather belt with a big rectangular brass buckle, and beneath it tight brown leather trousers, the fly and a belt looped through the side, the hand of his lowered arm tucked casually at the pocket. Behind him is a plain off-white studio wall, seamless and softly lit, with a blurred diagonal shadow banded across the upper right corner. The lighting is a single soft box high at the upper left, cool and directional, carving the body into bright planes and long soft shadows with a hard dark wedge under the hat brim across the eyes. Palette: cream, chalk blue, raw umber, sepia, black, and warm flesh ochres against a cool background. The touch is precise and patient in the face and hat, loose and scribbled in the vest, the straps and the shadow. Low three-quarter framing pressed close, a slight swagger in the pose.
