*** Lesser Stick-nest Rat - Leporillus apicalis ***
Short:
Small Australian rodent known for building large stick nests; now considered extinct.
Facts:
Habitat: Arid scrublands and woodlands of central Australia.
Threats: Habitat destruction, predation by cats and foxes, competition from invasive species.
Details:
The Lesser Stick-nest Rat was a unique rodent once found in Australia’s dry inland regions. It was known for building impressive stick nests, sometimes passed down for generations. The species lived in arid woodlands, feeding on leaves, seeds, and shrubs, and sheltering in its nest structures for safety.
Unfortunately, with the arrival of invasive predators such as feral cats and red foxes, along with habitat degradation from grazing livestock, the species rapidly declined. By the early 20th century, it was no longer observed, and today it is considered extinct.
Despite its loss, reconstructed knowledge of the species highlights the fragility of small mammal populations in the face of invasive predators and changing landscapes.
