Elyan froze where he stood. The voice had been little more than a whisper, yet it filled the entire hidden chamber. The blue light of his lantern flickered nervously, casting long shadows between the black memory cases. For a moment even the countless murmuring voices inside the sealed containers fell silent. It felt as though the room itself was holding its breath. Slowly Elyan released the silver cord of the box bearing his name. His eyes drifted toward the entrance. Nobody stood there. Only darkness. Deep, living darkness. Then something moved between the shelves. A soft rustling sound echoed through the chamber. Not threatening. Curious. Elyan raised his lantern. The pale blue glow slid across rows of black cases until it settled upon a small figure. At first he thought it was another young Memorai. But the longer he looked, the stranger it appeared. Its body was made of silvery mist that constantly shifted and flowed. Where hands should have been, strands of living memories shimmered in the air. Inside its translucent form, brief images appeared and vanished: faces, landscapes, voices, and fragments of forgotten stories. Its golden eyes watched Elyan closely. “You can see me,” the figure said in surprise. “Who are you?” Elyan asked. The being tilted its head. “I no longer remember.” Elyan frowned. “Nobody forgets their own name.” A sad smile crossed the creature’s face. “They do if someone erases it.” The answer sent a chill through him. The figure sat atop one of the black cases. “Most call me Tillo now.” The name felt strangely familiar to Elyan, although he was certain he had never heard it before. “What are you?” he asked. Tillo looked toward the towering shelves. “A memory nobody wanted to keep.” Silence settled between them. Then Tillo jumped down and motioned for Elyan to follow. Together they walked deeper into the forbidden chamber. The cases grew larger, older, and stranger. Some were secured with golden locks. Others were wrapped in heavy chains. A few seemed to move slightly, as if something inside was sleeping. “What is stored here?” Elyan asked. “Memories removed from the catalog,” Tillo answered. “Why?” “Because some truths are dangerous.” Elyan immediately thought of the empty place where his childhood should have been. “And my memories?” Tillo stopped. His golden eyes became serious. “That is why you are here.” Elyan’s heart quickened. “You know me?” “No,” Tillo replied. “But I have been waiting for you.” The words echoed through the chamber. “Waiting for me? Why?” Tillo guided him toward a solitary shelf at the far end of the hall. There stood a massive black case larger than all the others. Its surface was covered with silver symbols. At its center was a mark Elyan recognized immediately: a leaf from the Tree of Memories.
