The council chamber lay on the east side of the palace, far enough from the courtyard to keep out the noise of the stables, yet close enough to the kitchens to catch the aroma of roasting meat. Kaelen smelled it the moment he entered. His stomach churned; he had eaten nothing since the day before but a crust of bread while in the saddle.
The table was long and made of dark wood, worn smooth by centuries of resting elbows. Dresbad IV sat at the head. He sat motionless, hands clasped, watching Kaelen the way one looks at a letter without yet knowing if it brings good news. Seven others sat at the table. He knew Jorvik and Aldemar.
Haldric Gar, seated with his hands flat against the wood, gave him a curt nod. He knew the others only by name.
There was one empty chair.
Kaelen sat down. The cut on his face pulled tight.
