In the 19th century, shipbuilding and heavy engineering were central to the Newcastle's prosperity; and the city was a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution. On 3 February 1879, Mosley Street in the city, was the first public road in the world to be lit up by the incandescent lightbulb. Newcastle was one of the first cities in the world to be lit up by electric lighting.
