The Onmyoji were practitioners of Onmyodo, an ancient Japanese esoteric tradition combining astrology, divination, and spiritual magic. Serving in imperial courts during the Heian period, they were both scholars and sorcerers, interpreting celestial signs and maintaining balance between the human and spirit worlds. Their knowledge was rooted in the duality of yin and yang, as well as the five elements, allowing them to predict events, ward off evil, and summon spiritual entities known as Shikigami. These spirits acted as servants, protectors, or messengers, bound by ritual and command. Onmyoji were highly respected yet also feared, as their influence extended into unseen realms. Their rituals often involved intricate symbols, sacred chants, and paper talismans imbued with power. While many served the court faithfully, some legends speak of rogue Onmyoji who used their abilities for darker purposes. Ultimately, they stood at the threshold between order and chaos, guardians of harmony in a world where unseen forces constantly stirred.
