These children do not lead an ordinary youth; their journey is often marked by hospital stays and rehabilitation sessions. Unfortunately, they are often teased at school and in life because of their disability. It is essential to instill in our children tolerance and respect for differences.

Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus which invades the nervous system.
Irreversible paralysis (usually of the legs) occurs in approximately one in 200 infected people.

Without palliative measures, between 5 and 10% of paralyzed patients die from asphyxia due to paralysis of the muscles providing ventilation. In patients who survive, we can observe residual paralysis causing disabilities with very variable degrees of damage.

Before the vaccination era, poliomyelitis affected more than 600,000 children per year worldwide.

Today, it is almost eradicated, but not completely. In 2021, 1,226 cases of poliomyelitis, all forms combined, were recorded, compared to 138 in 2018.

Between October 2022 and October 2023, 558 cases of paralysis were recorded across the world, according to the IMEP.

This disease remains a public health emergency.
