ABOUT THIS SPECIES

This alien species has features of several Earth animals, including insects (particularly the mantis, from which they get their Terran appelation) and lizards (note the split at front, where this immature Mantis is beginning to shed its skin).

These features change as the Mantis grows through its developmental stages : strangely, immature individuals are more reptilian, where mature individuals are more like insects, although on most planets reptiles are considered more evolved than insects, so it would usually be the other way around.

In any case, the Mantis comes to full sentience only gradually, reaching real self-awareness at the point of maturity, when the skull becomes completely elongated to make room for its rapidly developing brain.

The individual shown here has not begun that elongation process, so it is only as smart as a really smart dog.
