ArtistThe Petrified Giant – A Landscape That Was Once Alive Epic surreal fantasy landscape showing the colossal body of an ancient petrified giant who has become part of the land over thousands of years. At first glance the scene appears to be a magnificent mountain valley covered with forests, rocky cliffs, meadows and a tiny medieval village. Only upon closer inspection does the viewer realize that the entire landscape is actually the body of an unimaginably enormous stone giant lying peacefully on his back. His gigantic weathered face forms one side of the mountain range, partly buried beneath earth and vegetation. His closed eyes resemble deep rocky hollows, his enormous nose rises like a mountain ridge, and his long petrified beard has become a rugged forest-covered valley. Ancient pine and deciduous forests grow across his chest, shoulders and arms. His massive fingers emerge from the earth like weathered stone ridges and cliffs. A picturesque medieval village with tiny cottages, a church tower, winding paths and cultivated fields has unknowingly been built upon the giant's enormous chest. A narrow river flows through a natural depression between his arm and torso, forming waterfalls where it crosses folds in the ancient stone body. Small bridges connect parts of the village. Birds circle above the mountains. Parts of the giant have completely merged with nature: moss, trees, roots, grass and wildflowers cover the cracked stone skin, while other areas still clearly reveal enormous human features beneath centuries of erosion. The scale must feel absolutely monumental. The village, trees and houses should appear tiny compared with the giant. The viewer should experience a strong moment of discovery: first seeing a beautiful mountain landscape, then suddenly recognizing the gigantic sleeping figure hidden within it.
