What is the meaning of I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven?
Jesus describes the authority He is delegating to them as the "keys to the kingdom of heaven." He says that whatever they bind or loose on earth will be bound or loosed in heaven. Only the most trusted servant in the household would be given the keys to the doors of the estate.
And here the reason for the bright red light flare on my "shoulder" this morning.
We can see from Matthew 16:13–16 that when the Lord Jesus asked His several disciples, ‘Whom do men say that I the Son of man am,’ some of them said He was John the Baptist, some said Elijah, some said Jeremiah, and only Peter said, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ From this, we can see that among the twelve disciples, only Peter knew the Lord Jesus is the coming Messiah, Christ. Peter confirmed the Lord Jesus was Christ through His work and words. No matter how the Pharisees condemned, attacked and judged the Lord Jesus, he wasn’t deceived but just obeyed the guidance and will of the Holy Spirit and followed the Lord Jesus all the time. From this, we know Peter had true knowledge of the Lord Jesus. In addition, when the soldiers came to seize the Lord, Peter darted forward to protect the Lord and cut off a soldier’s ear. His action was a result of being hot-blooded and a little rude, which was not in line with the Lord’s will, but from another angle, in the presence of such a danger, that Peter did this showed he truly loved the Lord. Besides, after the Lord rose from the dead and ascended to heaven, Peter shepherded the churches according to the Lord’s commands and finally he was crucified upside down for the Lord, thereby bearing beautiful and resounding witness. From these things, we can also see Peter truly loved the Lord, or he wouldn’t risk his life to protect the Lord, nor would he pledge to follow the Lord till death and spread His gospel, much less bear the testimonies of submitting to God unto his death and loving Him to the extreme.”
Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for all your sin, all the sin you have committed in the past, all the sin you commit now and all the sin you will commit in the future. Sin is basically whenever we chose to go our way, and say no to his way. So Jesus’s death makes us clean of sin in God’s eyes if we allow him to take that punishment in our place.
In order to do that we must repent and believe, repenting means saying sorry for what we have done and believing that the first time you do it sincerely that God has forgiven you for all your sin (even ones not yet committed) and you intend to live your life for him.
Peter does this, after he denies Jesus 3 times he repents. Jesus’s death covers Peter’s denials in the same way it covers the sins of the thief on the cross next to him who he promises will see Jesus in paradise.
