Children share musical instruments they brought from home: one dark boy is playing a harmonica, an olive skinned dark haired boy plays a gourd with a network of beads (shekere), and the third child is a girl with copper hair and freckles who is playing a celtic bodhran with its double ended beater stick; together they are playing a tune they have all learned in their multicultural neighborhood; they sit on the ground tucked into the shade in one corner of a tiny backyard, all concentrating on the music.
Music is the universal language. It needs no translation. It crosses all kinds of barriers between people and connects them with a common understanding and appreciation.
