I found an interesting post on the origin of these expressions. Ancient Greece, the Middle Ages and Christianity are mentioned, and then the slightly more modern era when clouds are classified by height, and cumulonimbus was the ninth highest. I'm not an expert and I can't claim that it's all true, because I don't believe everything on the internet, but this story makes sense to me and is certainly interesting to read.
