The Sri Lanka Narrow-headed Gecko is a tiny, delicate species known for its slender head and swift movements. It lives primarily in shaded rainforest habitats, hiding among crevices of rocks, moist logs, and leaf litter. Because of its small size and secretive habits, it is often overlooked—yet it plays an important role in controlling insects in forest ecosystems.
This species is extremely sensitive to changes in moisture and shade levels. When forests are cleared or fragmented, the microhabitats it depends on—cool, damp, shaded areas—disappear. Urban expansion, small-scale logging, and agricultural land conversion are major threats. Even minor disturbances can displace populations because these geckos rely on very specific microhabitats.
Protecting continuous wet-zone forest cover and preserving rocky habitats are essential for the survival of this fragile endemic reptile.
