PART 3 — WHAT DOES NEUROSCIENCE SAY ABOUT OUR NEED FOR MEANING? Buddhism tells us that attachment can be a source of suffering. But what if our need for meaning is not simply something we should detach from? What if it is built into the human brain? Our brains constantly connect memory, emotion, reward and imagined futures. We don't merely experience the present—we construct a story about where we came from, who we are, and where we are going. And purpose gives that story a direction. When we have something meaningful to pursue, the brain can generate anticipation, motivation and reward. When that future disappears, something very different can happen: No purpose → no anticipation → less motivation → withdrawal → less connection → deeper emptiness. This doesn't mean neuroscience has discovered the meaning of life. It hasn't. It tells us something more modest—but perhaps more fascinating: The human brain appears to be designed to seek significance, connection and a reason to move toward tomorrow. So perhaps Buddhism is only half the story. Maybe we shouldn't simply ask: “How can I detach from my desires?” Maybe we should also ask: “Which desires give my life a reason to continue?” And that leads us to our next question: Did evolution give us the need for meaning because it helped our ancestors survive?
