Next to him but on the side opposite from the viewer, he has propped a fishing pole. This is not a fancy fishing rod, but is just a long thin stick that he has tied a fishing string to. The fishing line is in the water of the creek. There are no sign of any fish, but that is not the point of the young man's fishing as he is just enjoying his nap on a lazy Sunday. The overall mood is one of peace and relaxation and the lazy days a poor man can have resting by the local creek.
