In the furthest depths of the system, there is a seemingly desolate planet, formally volcanic, with minimal life. That was until the mining crew uncovered a vast underground cave network . . . and it's hibernating inhabitants. It took several rescue missions to learn of their fate, and re-secure the original mining station from the aliens. Early attempts didn't include any military support and crewed with only technicians or engineers with rudimentary tools and weapons they were easy fodder for the waking creatures. But eventually some survived long enough to relay the message back to the company. What was here. What they'd found. What was awaiting the next party to venture here...
Following the discovery, the inevitable company long range research group soon took an interest in the newly discovered life form. They were taken off their duties, gathered from across the system, and sent in secret to what would be their new home, or in some cases, their final resting place.
Dr Giger was one such company scientist sent to the planet to learn more, and research the potential applications for the xenomorphs. Her interests included biochemistry, the interaction of intricate chemical actions, reactions, whether by active or autonomous control by the organism. The physical characteristics, properties of the creatures, how they aided its survival, and made it possibly the perfect organism as some began to refer to it.
Initial contact showed the aliens to be extremely hostile, with instant danger to humans upon detection by the alien. Clearly a prey species, the research has been challengingly slow for Dr Giger - the need for military protection, and rigorous control procedures were essential for simply capturing alien test subjects, never mind continued close study.
Several casualties were recorded on the station's log early in both the military guard squad, but also scientific research team. Now with each alien secured separately, her research work could begin in earnest from behind the secured screen. What was the outer layer made of, how would it respond to changes in atmospheric conditions, what was the lifecycle and nature of the aliens? Behind the secured containment cell, Dr Giger felt safe to let her excitement build at the potential discoveries to be made, and possibly even harnessed as she conducted experiments, observing the subjects. For many years humans had learned from animals, and cultivated tools, and evolutionary advantages from animals. So what might this new animal bring to humanity, or even to her? Her mind raced at the thought, it was almost too much, but her scientific thinking kept her focussed on studying, researching. Wanting to reveal the secrets of the aliens before her, indeed how did they come to be, could they ever be tamed or trained as the company hoped for?
The company can have their bioweapons if they want she thought to herself, that's inevitable, but I want something. This is my discovery too...
