ArtistWe are the children of the last survivors, Only 1,280 people may have stood between humanity and extinction. Between 930,000 and 813,000 years ago, our ancient ancestors may have faced a massive population bottleneck as Earth's climate changed dramatically. Scientists analyzing modern human genomes estimated that the ancestral breeding population may have fallen to around 1,280 individuals, with the bottleneck lasting roughly 117,000 years. Think about that. A tiny ancestral population survived, reproduced, and passed on the genetic legacy that helped shape humanity today. Every human alive today is connected to an extraordinary story of survival. If our ancestors hadn't made it through, none of us would be here to tell their story.
